here be dragons
Dragon Shills
Of course there are no demons.
They are fictitious myth, fablers’ wares.
And Dragons are not fearful, not evil, never
agents of terror, conveyors of injustice.
Dragons are majestic, lovers of beauty,
protectors of frail humanity, deliver peace,
prosperity, gifts of progress and diligent husbandry.
Their brutal flame, but a clever demonstration, a show.
So entertaining, so brilliant a display for us below.
Yes, they soar and claim vast territory as their own;
their largesse dependent on wide airways for discharging
smoke and fire, open plains to spread immense wings.
We wouldn’t want them cramped, self-singed, inconvenienced.
Dragons, special beings, above our assigned stations, oversee,
keep our village tucked and safe, productive, running right.
Insinuate primal lizard brains persuasively, teach these
hungry, humble children to feed their might.

Re: here be dragons
hi libra,
I've pondered this poem and pondered it. I'm not sure about the tone: does it shift several times, and just how ironic is it? I hoped someone else would come along, comment and give me some insight, but no one has, so I shall have to reveal my ignorance. Is the poem referring to Chinese dragons, Celtic dragons or dragons in general, and does it matter? I suspect I'm missing something obvious! I didn't want you to think I was ignoring the poem; I'm just at a loss to comment on it intelligently at the moment.

Re: here be dragons
Thanks for letting me know about your difficulty with this piece. It was meant to be an ironic fairy tale puff piece for metaphoric dragons (not of a particular heritage, maybe Hollywood) -- you know, our overlords with the might of financial/political power.
It didn't seem opaque to me, more overly simplistic -- but I guess I was the only one watching the cartoon in my imagination.

Re: here be dragons
hey libra,
fwiw, I did think the dragons were metaphors for oligarchs and overlords...the 1%...and how we've been conditioned to perceive them (at some point I wondered if they were drones)
anyway, I couldn't agree with you more. sometimes you just gotta let it rip
best,
Chris

Re: here be dragons
Ah, thank you for the clarification, libra and Chris. Now I get it. I was being too mythological in my reading rather than metaphorical.

a wonderful series of lines. and i very much like this new take, this fresh approach to dragons. and to then add, the dragons are both beautiful and protectors.
Dragons are majestic, lovers of beauty,
protectors of frail humanity, deliver peace,
prosperity, gifts of progress and diligent husbandry.
