Poker as a Metaphor for Poetry

Poker as a Metaphor for Poetry

Play the cards you are dealt,
inflated for the gaze of your opponents.
Don't squander emotion reactively.
Enjoy the thrill of being in the game.

Re: Poker as a Metaphor for Poetry

Libra, you got a knack for the epigrammatic in poetry. A light form for sure. And Poe was right in taking the eipigram to task for what he called its undue brevity, lacking the steady pressing down of the stamp, as he said. On the other hand I am a sucker for the epigram's smart, sharp talk. You take a thought or observation, give it a single sharp twist or turn and POW, baby pops out. How is that for a literary definition? Here, I am loving the internal contradiction with lines 2 & 3. It is exactly right, that contradiction. Makes the metaphor work nicely.

You know me. Some might say I have too much poetry in my head. But a favorite book on my shelves is known as the Greek Anthology. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,500 years of epigrammatic poetry written in Classical Greek. Poets who might be your kindred.
