The Letters of Samuel Beckett

“I know no more about this play than anyone who manages to read it attentively. . . . I do not know who Godot is. I do not even know if he exists. And I do not know if they believe he does, these two who are waiting for him.”

Re: The Letters of Samuel Beckett

Thanks, Chris. I had forgotten that Beckett involved himself in the French Resistance during WW II. Rather stark contrast to what we've recently discussed about G. Stein during the same time period, yes?

For me Beckett has always been less enigmatic than he was reluctant to either get defined or even define himself. A true shape shifter. Something I can relate to.

Re: The Letters of Samuel Beckett

Christine,

Having read the little article, I was surprised how downright "oridinary" his life was during the period talked about. He may have had a life on the "edge" while in the Resistance, but this about a wheel-barrow and worms sounds very normal. For some people this would be the ideal conditions for writing. Hemingway, who is now considered a renowned "a-hole" seems to have spent a lot of his relaxation time drinking or fishing. I think Faulkner drank. I guess they are all different. Still, this surprises me about Beckett. Would have liked to see that play "Waiting for Godot" done by the prisoners. I did see it in Buffalo, NY. Thanks, Zak
