Alternative response to yesterday's quote:

Inspiration: when confidence, or its lack, cease to matter.

In the Company of Cats, Humming

Went to bed with an unfinished poem in my mouth and could not kiss. VP

Woke up with a new poem on my lips and fed the cats. The computer screen, cuppa joe and my Life* had to wait.

Good morning, guys. vkp, I like your morning poem! Chris, you mentioned that writing these daily poems reminds you of playing in a sandbox. I think the key is not taking ourselves too seriously. To wit:

my poems at the apple pie bakery

bite-sized
like mini-danishes
& sample-size pastries
they’re free
but you can only take a few
great for dieters!

Kat, your yummy cat poem makes me want to return to you a poem I found recently that I made when finding a stray (I always end up with the strays). I still have 2 of her kittens....

Stray

We met the cat at the door of the school.
With eyes like yellow moons
that move in an alien sky,
she was all belly with licorice-stick legs,
twisted in mockery of her delicate fear.
Limping in circles,
she tried to find a safe place
to alight, to push out into the cold
four kittens.

Oh, vkp, what a wonderful, nearly heartbreaking poem. I especially like:

With eyes like yellow moons
that move in an alien sky,
she was all belly with licorice-stick legs,
twisted in mockery of her delicate fear.

Thank you so much for sharing this. emoticon

Hey Chris, that article remninded me of a program I saw on TV about death row inmates and their cats, i.e., shelter cats who had been scheduled for euthanasia. The cats seemed content living in those small cells, and the inmates obviously loved them.

See? This here thread is one reason why I enjoy our board so much. One poet starts messing around. Before you know it she ain't alone.

Kat, I am keeping up with you. I take particular delight in the way you have for shaping and handling your thoughts. Cocteau said that that, in the end, is what the question of style comes to: the shaping and handling of how one thinks.

Side note. It was Hemingway who once said to a friend that, when between novels, he didn't worry so long as he sensed the incipients of an idea in his head.

were love poems.

I got the title for this poem by using the I Ching Online, which I just discovered a few days ago:

Thanks, Chris. I've been wishing the muse would be a little more generous with me, but then I remembered two things.

I once heard Jane Hirshfield read from her book Lives of the Heart. She prefaced the reading by saying that she knew it was risky using the word heart in a poem but that she also knew you shouldn't turn away what the muse was offering. Then, too, I recalled a story which basically said: if you are ungrateful for small gifts, what makes you think the universal will send you a big one?
