glad to be here ...

I'm very happy to have found this site; from what I've read it's lively minded here and very sound ethically and poetically! Thanks, Katlin, for welcoming me when I dived in to comment on a wonderful sonnet.

I write erratically atm and with unsteady confidence. The urge (you know the one?) is greater than my ability I think lol. For a few years I allowed someone to mess up my natural style too much; I learned a lot but am now trying to rebuild my own ways and possibilities, if that makes sense.

So, I'll comment for awhile before torturing you all with my stuff, if that's ok?

D

Hi Daisy,

I've been trying to respond to your post for the past 5 minutes, because one of my cats decided it was time to sit on my lap and have me pet her. Then my other cat came in and decided it was time to pester her sister. Stop!!! emoticon

This site is designed for people who are writing, people who aren't writing atm, and people who don't write at all but who like to read, so it is perfectly okay for you to read and comment for as long as you like without posting your own work. When you decide you want to post your own writing, there are number of options for doing so. If you would like critique, you can post in the Poetry and Prose Spectrums. If you would like general feedback and comments without critique, you can post in Chalkboard and Billboard or Field Notes, depending on what type of writing you are doing. And finally, if you want to set up your own criteria for how others respond to your work, you can post in Ateliers.

So, feel free to do whatever feels comfortable to you. As Tere likes to say: it's all good.

My previous post was from Kat, the admin; this post is from Kat, a fellow member.

I write erratically atm and with unsteady confidence. The urge (you know the one?) is greater than my ability I think lol. For a few years I allowed someone to mess up my natural style too much; I learned a lot but am now trying to rebuild my own ways and possibilities, if that makes sense.

It does make sense, a lot of sense. I know exactly what you mean, and if this was a real life classroom, I'd be raising my hand, saying, "Me too!" One of the reasons this board was created was to address and hopefully help correct the not uncommon situation you/me/we find ourselves in.

Daisy, a big ole welcome to the board. My sense is that you've taken the time to look around and see both what the board is about and how it operates. I seriously thank you for taking that time. Mostly, I can only echo Kat's two posts. Frankly, board's design reflects a whole lot of experience on other, mostly poetry, boards. Here we encourage both creative prose and discussions on a variety of topics. But the big thing about us is that we have fora in which the poet or writer can set her own parameters respecting how she wants to be taken. (Pretty much what Kat has already said.) Design is deliberate and, to my mind, more allowing of individual creative processes. So feel free to play in the way right for you. Play being the operative word, perhaps.

Your mentoring experience brings an anecdote to mind, something Caroline Kizer said about poetry teachers. A good teacher wants you to be the best you can be. A bad teacher wants you to be like them only not quite as good. Something to chew on.

Engage at will.

Re: glad to be here ...

Hi Daisy,

Once upon a time there were three cats eating out of a dumpster. When she was visiting on Christmas Eve, my friend S saw them and fed them from a big bag of cat food she kept in the trunk of her car and used to feed the abandoned cats behind Shop Rite. Before she left, S gave me the bag of food. That's how it started. Within a few years, I was feeding 21 (or was it 23?) cats. People began to call me the cat lady! One day after watching me walking around calling all the cats at feeding time, the mechanic across the street yelled over, "Who are you--the Pied Piper of cats?" LOL Funny, but actually not funny. Many phone calls, tears, deaths and happy visits later, I was down to 4 cats. Indy was one of those four, and the only one left. emoticon

After that I swore off stray cats, and did very well for a number of years. Last summer though, 2 strays made me forget my old vow. Four months, many phone calls, tears and two wonderful cat rescuers such as yourself later, just before Christmas, one stray was taken to the SPCA and one, Jasmine, now lives with me. She's a little bit of a wild thing, as I knew she would be, and has gotten into more trouble in 5 months inside, than Indy has gotten into in 10 years. emoticon All those years and cats ago, I thought I was rescuing/taming them, but it turns out they were rescuing/taming me. emoticon

oh my, how did you, Katlin and Terreson, simultaneously come up with what I most needed to hear??

Thank you for that tale of cats ... weird how energy shifts around; it used to be stray dogs with me, then suddenly it changed to cat ... though of course there are so many angels in furriness and feather ... I am so awed and honoured by them all.

And yes, the mentor thing ... exactly as you described! I'm still smarting a bit and thanking you for the knife-edge clarity delivered via Caroline Kizer ...

I'm still reading loads here but a little quiet due to flu ... can't seem to focus enough to actually comment .. do you have a telepathic input board? Might be a better way for me than typing this last week or so lol

It's interesting that you should say that. Of indy, the cat who sat on my lap, I always say, "Little cat, big spirit."

From one of my refrigerator magnets: "You are not the boss of me. My cat is." Here's another one: "Cats leave pawprints on your heart." emoticon

PS I hope you feel better soon.

Okay you cat people. Hope you don't know this old joke. So when a dog gets fed, she looks at her owner and thinks: you must be a god. When a cat gets fed she thinks: I must be a god. ta ta dum. A couple of years ago I was adopted by a cat so gray he almost looks blue. He is a Katrina survivor found floating on plywood in Lake Ponchatrain in the aftermath of the storm and flooding. Just walked through my front door one day and curled up on the bed. Strictly, he belongs to my next door neighbor. I don't know. Maybe he prefers the food I give him. Most nights, like last night, he sleeps with me. Except that he gets irritated that I am on the bed, will jump down and curl up on the floor. His owner can also get irritated with me. Says things like: I bet he walks you to your car when you leave for work in the morning. He kind of does actually. Then comes out of nowhere when he hears my car coming home. But I got this rule: don't ask for food if there is still some in your bowl. One evening he comes in, sniffs the day old food, and starts asking it be replinished. After a few minutes I say: You know the rule, Gray Cat; if you don't like the food you can go back out. No kidding. He starts for the bedroom, changes his mind and goes for the door before changing his mind again, describes a 180 turn and jumps up on a chair. I let a couple of hours pass before replacing his food with something fresh. Can't let a cat have his way all the time.
