No disrespect to GF's other interests. I think we'll all navigate to the area that serves our interests. BTW, I enjoyed the exchange; it was puzzling and mildly entertaining. I agree that about deleting things midway through the process. But on occasion I do delete a poem I've posted. And a good qualifier. Entirely possible we do not have enough members yet for such a game. But I figure it likely we will soon. So, at the very least, let's keep the idea in mind. It could be fun. A small board takes a very committed group of poets to make it work, though. Not sure we have that kind of participation here yet. Well, okay, Gary. Carry on as you wish with your Challenges idea in the Spectrum forum. This actually saves me some work. Keep in mind, please, that the Spectrum is primarily a workshop forum, with emphasis placed on the critical exchange between poet and critic. About your concern over tedium. Members make a board, man, not rules. I also figure it is key to make a board with room for all such dispositions and partialities. This I hope we can do. Just so it is clear, Impish Improv is not intended to replace what you have in mind with the Challenge notion. Come a free day, possibly next weekend, and I'll create a spot to accomodate your idea. I’ll try to meet the challenge. Give me an example of “Impish Improv” and I’ll try to meet that challenge too. As I’ve said elsewhere many times before, I’m only in it for the poetry. I no longer debate the virtues of this poet or that, that school or this, this style or another. I left that stuff behind many years ago. My learning ended when I left the University, but my education began thereafter. So what do you think? Should we create a seperate forum, with your parameters in mind, or should it be a thread in an already established forum? I am thinking the first option would work best. Let me know what you think. About Impish Improv. Don't cut the idea down so quickly. People actually like word play. Myself included. I think I got a half-dozen poems I can can stand by that first started out, germinally, in improv settings. Give it a try sometime, dude. Come on over to the dark side. Terenondisclosed_email@example.com (Terreson)Mon, 12 Jan 2009 21:10:00 +0000 Re: CHALLENGEhttps://bdelectablemnts.runboard.com/p1203,from=rss#post1203https://bdelectablemnts.runboard.com/p1203,from=rss#post1203I guess my intention with the ‘Challenge’ topic wasn’t all that clear. Please let me explain. I post on a number of poetry sites and I have found that I usually have an ‘on topic’ poem for whatever subject happens to comes up. I now have six collections of poetry, four published and two forthcoming this summer. This adds up to over six hundred poems. Problem is, even though the poem may be appropriate to the topic, inserting it into the middle of a given discussion may not. I thought it would be fun to challenge people to come up with a subject, any subject, to see if I could come up with a poem to fit the bill. Then, someone would have to match my poem with another on the same subject. I can imagine a whole thread of great poems on a particular subject, maybe even many threads with poems on many subjects. I looked at it as a poetic game of sorts. Maybe it’s not a good idea. I was a little lit at the time, I admit, but I just think that poetry boards should be more fun. We all seem to take ourselves way too seriously. But the subject can be serious. You should read my war poetry on the Poetry Foundation blog, Silliman’s blog or It’sJustWar. It can be about pain, loss, death, Nature. Pick a subject, any subject. I just don’t do silly. And I can tell you that "Impish Improv" ain't gonna cut it. nondisclosed_email@example.com (GaryBFitzgerald)Mon, 12 Jan 2009 20:29:21 +0000 Re: CHALLENGEhttps://bdelectablemnts.runboard.com/p1197,from=rss#post1197https://bdelectablemnts.runboard.com/p1197,from=rss#post1197quote:GaryBFitzgerald wrote: Tere: I tend to be somewhat mischievous now and then and like to have a little fun. This was meant to humorously imply that nobody had the courage to take my challenge. Just trying to have some fun and liven things up a bit So, about Larkin’s poem. I first posted my poems in Gaia’s Gown because they were Nature oriented. I noticed, though, that I not only got no replies, but I was getting no views at all. I then learned that member’s were unaware that poems were even posted there. This turned out to be true for Dragon’s poems in Field Notes as well. So, I put my “Challenge” in the Poetry to Prose spectrum. I was then advised by ‘Mum’ and ‘Dad’ that I was in the wrong shop. Not a very wide spectrum! I am having trouble navigating this forum. On a regular blog the posts are sequential so you can see what was posted before in order. On another forum I was on there was a ‘View The Most Recent Posts’ feature, so one could keep up with conversations on many different threads. Here, it seems only to be by date and time. I can’t keep up without opening every thread by trying to remember whatever date I was last there. I am very frustrated. If I post in one category, nobody even notices. If I post in another (the one, presumably, that is specifically intended for poetry posts), I am advised that I’m in the wrong place. I’m starting to feel like Dr. John: “I was in the right place, but it must have been the wrong time. I think it was the right time, but I was in the wrong place.” Well, Gary, I am not sure I've read you to string so many words together, here or elsewhere. Let me see if I can walk through your thoughts. Down in Gaia's forum you've posted 6 poems, 3 of which got comments. 50% ain't a bad response actually, at least, not in my experience of poetry boards. Of course, Gaia's Gown is going to need some getting used to. When people come to poetry boards they've pretty much been trained to look for poetry only where the board advertises poetry is in order. The Gaia forum is built differently. It is going to draw members who respond to the theme in the first place. That you take up residence there is cool. And I think I get why. Similarly, Dragonman has said he feels most comfortable in the Field Notes forum, which makes sense too. But I got to say again the board is going to need some time so that boarders get the interdisciplinary hang of things here. About your Challenge thread up in the Spectrum. Man, I was completely confused. I still don't know what the challenge involved. What was the challenge? I guess I wrongly assumed it was a challenge to improv poetry. And I guess I still don't understand what you were after with the thread. Because the forum is a place for poet/critic dialogue, as such a workshop spot, I guess I couldn't make sense of what your thread wanted to do. I didn't know how to proceed. And, yes. There is a big difference between blogs and boards. As you say, blogs proceed sequentially, linearly, from one post to the next. Boards are different. They operate laterally, with a bunch of conversational threads going on at the same time, which is both the beauty and the beast in a board's composition. Call me crazy. But I prefer boards to blogs. I like the associative play boards allow me. This way I can switch from a poem to talking about Montaigne to something you or someone else puts up that absolutely seems to matter. One last word, Gary, but a word in two parts. Editing out posts started that then generate conversation tends to debiliate further conversations. People get to where they question why they should invest in the response. Second part. Poetry board exchanges work best in the spirit of reciprocity. Quid pro quo, man.
