Her Laundry
Last woman on the northern
continent to keep a clothesline
in the large, lean yard
a few flowering shrubs, two trees
A newly planted avocado
two years until it bears fruit
begging a bad question
I offer to hang her laundry
Too many panties, I think
I'll run out of clothes pins
before the nighties and shorts
with elastic waist bands
Irritated by the excess, I check myself
An old woman's luxury
this pair looks like leopard skin.

Re: Her Laundry
I like this, Chris, and the way it turns into an inimate portrait of both the old woman and the N. I like the sensitivity disclosed in lines like "begging a bad question" and "An old woman's luxury". "This pair that looks like leopard skin" reminds me of the Red Hats Society and the popularized saying "When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple." I like your notion better though: "When I am an old woman, I shall wear leopard skin panties."
I think there is something to be said for keeping up one's spirit by keeping up appearances. The other night I went out to dinner with a 95 year old friend. Afterwards we decided to stop at a crafts store. On the way there my friend got out her compact and lipstick. I had to smile at such persistence, while hoping I didn't hit a pothole!

Re: Her Laundry
hi Kat,
Thanks very much for your close read and thoughtful reaction. I love that compact and lipstick ritual--all the moms, grandmas, aunts
and great-aunts flipping their compacts open like cell phones,
Chris
