John Singer Sargent

Following Hurricane Gustav Monday, by Thursday neighbors were talking with each other and sharing food. One neighbor is a painter who works free lance. Over a meal we got to talking. She allowed as how John Singer Sargent is one of her main men. He is one of mine too. The next day she let me in to her apartment to show what she does. And we exchanged Sargent print books. I also loaned her a Sargent biography from my library. I think we agreed that what struck us both about Sargent was his capacity for light and shadow play, how light bends into deepening layers of shade.

Not since Valesquez has a painter had such a feeling for light and shade and the interstice between the two. Not since Sargent has any painter I know of paid as much attention to the same.

Good stuff, Dragonman. Damn good stuff. Your essay on Sargent is perceptive. And your photo got me immediately. As for your other entry I would add Velasquez to your gallery. I am sure you know Sargent was influenced by him.

I've got so many favorite Sargent paintings I can't think of them all. But your comment about the reciprocity of influences between photography and art brings to mind Sargent's Venetian paintings, his streets and his interiors.

By the way, Caravaggio is also personal favorite.
