The KT event

I've been thinking a lot lately about the so-called KT event. Gaia got big time walloped that day, some 65 million years ago. The asteroid whose impacting consequences brought about the mass extinctions of the earth's then dominany species, dinasours, was somewhere in the neighborhood of 9 miles in diameter. I guess what has brought it all back to mind is the news that the recent Chilean earthquake has ever so slightly altered the earth's axial spin, making an earth day a millisecond or so shorter.

It all rather puts into perspective one's priorities, ne's pas? Especially since that chance event cleared a measure of space for mammalian development. Whose to say what will be Gaia's next dominant species?
