Re: Non-italicized Letter in a Block Party Motif
Hi Opie,
This has a flarfy feel to me. Not sure if that was your intention. The title refers to a letter, and I get the feeling of a conversation, or many conversations. A day in an online life. A day spent at an internet block party. A number of themes, or topics of talk, run throughout, and they cover a gambit from quirkly to more serious. Mostly male speakers from what I can tell. The yoga neighbor gets quoted and some of the answers might be to implied female speakers/listeners/correspondents. In the chat room men come and go, speaking of Don DeLillo. Not much of a critique, but that's my take so far.

Re: Non-italicized Email Letters in a Block Party Motif
But of course online letters are emails. Doh! Why didn't I think of that?
I collaged a few emails with a poet friend of mine over in Denmark…
I took a wee bit of liberty editing and splicing other stuff. I was looking for a fun, interesting read with some eavesdropping and/or voyeurism throw in the mix. It probably works best when I read it out loud.
Ah, so it is kind of flarfy, the difference being you collaged most of the material from your emails with a friend instead of trolling the internet for it. As a result, I like the tone of this piece better than I like most flarf, which often feels condescending. The eavesdropping, voyeurism angle definitely comes through, which is why I made that doctored up Prufrock reference. I can imagine it would be even funnier if you read it out loud, but it reads well as it is. There is a lot of humor in the piece with a few serious moments here and there to keep it weighted down.

Re: Non-italicized Email in a Block Party Motif
Singular is good and is often used as plural in this context.
"After this... no one will email me knowing I'll probably force the words to say things at gun point."
Ha! That thought did cross my mind. All I can say is, you better start thinking up new alibis.
"That's the definition of Advertising:
Using words against their will."
Now see, I would have worked that up into a little poem and used it as my poem for the day.

Re: Non-italicized Email Letters in a Block Party Motif
Why did I take so long getting around to your piece? Clearly a case of my bad. Don't know if this will meaning anything to you. But I have not been tickled by writing like this since I first read JP Donleavy back in the early 70s. Are you old enough to remember that crazy bastard who could take the most gut wrenching thing, like maybe love and betrayal, even death, and find the most supreme moments of humor? I swore by his Ginger Man novel. By his the Onion Eaters novel too. Nobody since has reminded me of him. Until now. I knew I couldn't be, but always wanted to be that kind of writer.
This is some seriously, poignantly fun stuff. Some of the context-bound language I'm not certain I get. That doesn't worry me overly much. One question I really want answered. Does boning up for the Yoga neighbor mean what I want it to mean? Damn but I hope so.
Quite good writing. One more thing. Kat is better than the average bear for keeping contemp. If, as she seems to think, this is an example of flarf writing, in my best old man costume, I submit Donleavy was writing flarf novels before there was the flarfing flarf word for it.
Thoroughly enjoyed the piece's voice. Maybe I need to email you to get so disabused.

Love this. That's all. No wisdom or erudition to offer. Made me smile. And yeah, any man not born in Texas is fine by me too, but hey. I've known one or two mighty fine Texans -- go figure.
