After All Our Addictions Have Come to Pass
Here is a poem I wrote several months ago for an ekphrasis group challenge. I don't remember who the painting that was offered for the challenge was by - it was a mostly blue painting with very few sharp details. I preferred the lack of clarity in this particular painting, though, as compared to other challenges where the art was very clear and the scene very much defined.

After All Our Addictions Have Come to Pass
In the thumb-smudged yonder: You are here. In the slender dash between the earth and the sky and I know you are here because I have drawn you waiting. Have raised you up from the time when we were children. To stand where you stand, beautiful here before your mountains. And I have drawn their faces from memory. I have made the words sweet. You are here, hush, and I am there. Beside the waves where you have put me. And I am learning the songs of your silence, with my flesh gone scaled, gone silver. These days, I crave the erasure of distance, the parting of water. My darling, you are here. It's the only way.

Re: After All Our Addictions Have Come to Pass
So many layers in so short a space. Goodness. A bunch of different associations could be drawn out of the text. A lover, a child, a questing, even something coming out of the mystic. The landscaping especially works for me. Mallarme said the dream of poetry is to suggest, not make an object out of the thing(s). This is how I approach your poem.

Re: After All Our Addictions Have Come to Pass
hi Susan,
This has a very tender quality; interesting how the narrator has "drawn you that way," while the person addressed has "put" the narrator "beside the waves." Suggesting that each one's part has been created by the other.
Relationships! "It's the only way."
Forgive me if I got it all wrong. This is lovely and evocative.

Re: After All Our Addictions Have Come to Pass
Thanks so much, Tere and Chris. Love your interpretations of this very much. Tere - I very much agree of poetry suggesting rather than making an object. I hope to write in a way that allows the reader to take the images and make them his/ her own... Not easy to do, but it's fun to aspire to.
