Two Poems for Labor Day
.
Spider
I’ve worked on this poem
for over an hour.
I looked up to ponder my next line,
saw a spider.
Something was caught in his web.
Every time I looked back up
he was winding and working
and wrapping his prey.
I wonder about the time we’ve each
invested, working on our projects
side by side.
We both spent an hour or more,
but what did it pay?
I didn’t make a nickel and I’m hungry
and he had his dinner today.

Breezy Night
Chimes blend evening breeze with song.
Up late tonight past bedtime. Troubled.
Bad day at work.
Slowly the sleepy wind blends me
with scent of Jasmine.
I finally begin to relax, to smile.
I can hear the music now.
I look back on my day, a long one.
Well, I managed to get by again,
managed to survive.
Now out here in the night
with the dark and the flowers,
I listen to the chimes and consider
all the wrongs I’ve done to stay alive.
Anyone with no regrets
must be senile.

Re: Two Poems for Labor Day
Good poems, Gary. Second one especially. Funny day today. In my life time I've never seen labor at as much risk as this year, these past couple of years. Good to see you come by.

Re: Two Poems for Labor Day
I heard someone say on the radio today that since nobody is working in America any more and the middle class and Unions are dying and the economy is now run by rich bankers and Wall Street and politicians, we should just change the name of the holiday to ‘Capital’ day.

Re: Two Poems for Labor Day
Thank you. I’m happy that you liked my poems. If you want, you can read a bunch more of them by Googling Gary B. Fitzgerald.
Of course, you could also (Gasp!!) buy one of my books (cheapskates.).
Here’s some of the internet mischief I’ve been up to lately:

Re: Two Poems for Labor Day
Hey, Gary, I always liked watching spiders. There is something both comforting and beautiful in their spinning. I am also glad to know that everyone has regrets. Thanks for the reminders. Thanks for chiding me over here.
Gemini, like the wind bringing bits of otherwhere for inspiration and conversation.

I am always and madly in love with wind. Even when it lays open my frailty to the cold, it is a longingly vibrant friend.

Re: Two Poems for Labor Day
Can't resist.
Gary, I followed your link to Scarriet to see what you have been up to as you suggest. I haven't thought about that blog in well over a year, maybe two. Not even a blip on my radar. But I note they haven't changed. Still the same culture of argument. But to let you know what a real recalcitrant I am the only time I think of Ashbery is when someone mentions his name. Another non-blip on the old radar screen. Which non-blip brings me to my recommendation. Forget about him. Poets looking to trash other poets, to me at least, is simply a matter of penis envy on the part of either gender.

Good advice. I agree. I have repeated this to others.
