Poetry Is Not
"Poetry is not a healing lotion, an emotional massage, a kind of linguistic aromatherapy. Neither is it a blueprint, nor an instruction manual, nor a billboard.”

Re: Poetry Is Not
I used to say this:
Poetry is neither comment, consolation, or complaint. It is a shiver and a seizure.
I still say it.

Re: Poetry Is Not
I remember hearing this as a child. I did not recall who said it so I just looked it up and it was Marianne Moore. She said, "Poetry is the art of creating imaginary gardens with real toads." I like what Rich and Tere say about poetry even more, but this thread called this to mind. It has always stuck with me. I think it is really what is in my head all the time when I try to teach my students about writing.

Re: Poetry Is Not
Tere,
Keep saying it! Your comment is as powerful as Rich's.
vkp,
I've always liked that Moore quote too, the whole poem that line comes from.
