Dear Kira,
we cooked a lazy meal
baked potatoes and fried onions
the way it caught us
sitting down to eat
and the phone ringing
hearing your name repeated
like a gun-shot bird
or a hooked fish
your name torn from its element
I meet my age in a whittled place
a sanded hollow, made by loss
friend, I cannot lay you there
traveler, I could not leave you there
not you

Re: Dear Kira,
Thank you, Kat.
Kira was my sister-in-law. She and my brother remained friends long after their marriage ended. We were friends and my family was very fond of her. She was a few years younger than me--a white river rafting guide, teacher, massage therapist--new age adventurer. A warm, sweet person.
She passed rather suddenly last Friday and we are still absorbing the loss,
Chris
