Graves and the White Goddess

Robert Graves wrote out his thesis on the White Goddess during WW II. Borrowing from early Greek religion he called her Lady of the Wild Things. But I know enough of her by now to know she has a better name: the Lady with 10,000 names. Gaia is one of them.

Graves said this, circa 1945. "But the longer her hour is postponed, and therefore the more exhausted by man's irreligious improvidence the natural resources of the soil and sea become, the less merciful will her five-fold mask be..." In his own mythopoeic way Graves was talking about ecological disaster brought about by "man's irreligious improvidence" practiced against the Lady with 10,000 names. Here is the face of a woman pissed off.
