Re: Changes to the board.

Thanks, board buddies. As some can remember we were once before put up in the contest. My distinct impression then was that the winning board's owner(s) solicited votes from friends. Certainly an acceptable practice, still not one I am inclined to follow. In its almost 3 years lifespan this board has kept to the straight and narrow in all its dealings. See no reason to change tactics. Anyway, I view the contest mainly as a means for garnering attention. That said, yours truly is humbled when members believe enough in the proceedings to give the board a thumbs up.

On a different note, I've decided to explore the possibility of gaining inclusion in the IBPC thing. Last night I wrote a letter to the contact person IBPC posts as the contact. I linked to the link on its home page, wrote a letter, sent it, and email was returned as undeliverable. Next I'll go to Rus Bowman for email address clarification and inquire again. If given the okay, I'll alert the board before applying to make sure y'all want to be a member.

#1 topic: Drat--we're now tied for 2nd place!

#2 topic: I think I vote yes to your proposal, Tere, but I'm still the newbie here. Might put more posts in Ateliers vs. Poetry Spectrum first...await more info

Thank you for everything you do to keep this board as interesting, fresh, insightful, crisp, thought-provoking, stimulating et al as you do, and same to you Kat and Chris!

Dear All Knowing Board "Directors" for lack of a better term: (and I did see one of you behind the curtain of "Oz the Terrible"!)

If I, or any one else, should post in Ateliers, how would said artist inform other members that citiques are welcome?

Such delightful summer grass smell accompanies this post............

and Tere, bleeding hearts also attract hummingbirds.

This should be in Field Notes, but I'm just too comfortable and really (really? ready to sleep? there is flitting and bombing and fly-overs and sneak attacks from the limb that came down in a recent thunderstorm and blue jays trying to enter houses that were specifically made for wren pairs--my goodness, if I have to supervise all of these creatures i shall never sleep, and Tere, will you accept some accountability since I have been stuck on your question about what plants attract birds and hummings at once?......bleeding hearts, dear Tere, and petunias (do they grow in CA?), hunisuckle (that displays very poor literacy!), lilies of the valley.....?

OK, I am officially more tired than I can type.

Love to you all.

Going to bed now.

There is joy in every day!!

I hold you all in light and the very creative force for which you were all intended to manifest.

Nameste (literally "the light in me welcomes the light in you")

Hi Liz,

When you or anyone else starts a thread in Ateliers, you can indicate immediately before or after the piece what type of response is desired: general commentary, gentle feedback, rigorous critique, etc.

Re: Changes to the board.

A reminder about Delectable Mnts protocol, its terms of service. I encourage everyone, old and new members alike, to read the board's Art of Conversation forum. It is simple reading and to the point. For convenience here is the link:

http://bdelectablemnts.runboard.com/t12

I bring attention to two points, points I feel strongly about. No member of the board suffers the personal attack. And what I call taliban-like behavior, or talibaning about, is not tolerated.

Re: Changes to the board.

Hi guys,

I noticed some problems with the board today (links not working, posts stretching out and difficult to read). I wasn't sure if it was my problem, DM's problem or Runboard's problem. Looks like the problem may be Runboard's:

Hi Tere,

Please don't fault Liz for posting her thread about the editing process in Salon Chat! When she asked elsewhere on the board where best to start such a thread, I suggested either Salon Chat or Discussion I would work. I can see the sense in moving the thread, however. I moved Rus's thread "Colette Bryce's poetry workshop: Names" from Discussion I to News You Can Use. Again, either forum would work but the latter makes more sense to me. emoticon

You just jogged my memory, Kat. I remember the exchange between you and Liz. If everyone is copacetic with the moves I made we'll keep to them. It makes more sense to me. If not, I can move both posts back to Salon Chat. Likely we each have our own notions about each forum's purpose.

Saturday afternoon and I've caught up with responding to poems posted. It occurs to me that, as our board grows, and if everyone puts out material as substantiative as what I read and respond to now, I might not be able to keep up. A problem I look forward to facing.

Re: Changes to the board.

This is nasty and upsetting business. I've lost sleep over it. I made this message late Saturday night. Today is Monday. Then I reconsidered and deleted it, not wanting to bring upset to the board. I've reconsidered again. This board started out promising to be transparent in management. So far it has been and it will be, no matter the fall out.

Saturday I came to the board. There were three posts in The Poetry Spectrum, each a response to three poems by the member Elizabeth Anne. In each case the request was to delete the poem. It was signed by someone named Carles G. Amos, executor of Elizabeth Anne's estate. As requested I deleted the poems. I think there are 9 other poems by the author still posted. A recent one of which is a suicide poem, perhaps a suicide note. It is called "Try Angles." Naturally I assumed bad stuff.

Then I got to thinking. Is Elizabeth Anne alive? Is she dead? If dead, that means someone who is not a member has access to this board using her IP address and screen name. I decided such stuff was unfair to our board. We are not deserving of such hurt, even from someone who may be hurting. I denied access to anyone writing from that address.

Only, I screwed up down in the control panel. Late last night, Sunday, someone using Elizabeth Anne's IP address puts a message on the board, in Salon Chat as I recall. The person says he is Elizabeth Anne's husband, that she is in ICU and recovering. I'm thinking: My wife is in intensive care and my immediate thought is to post a message about her on a poetry board for people she has never met? I go back to the control panel. This time IP address is successfully refused access to our board.

Story should end here but it doesn't. Tonight, coming home from work and out of some serious heat, I have 3 PMs from Elizabeth Anne. 2 from her and 1 from her husband. When I come to the board to open them, messages are gone. I don't know, deleted maybe. I can't know.

There it is. In management practices this board will keep transparent, even when ugly, even at the cost of losing membership. I am a poet first, a manager third.

One last note. I resent gratuitously played out pain. I will close down this poetry board before such a scene gets played out again.

Oh, I hate this, Tere. I am sorry you have had to deal with it. For me, these things take a real emotional toll on me, and have totally messed me up in the past 2 days - mostly, because I walk so close to the edge. (I saw your post, Tere, and guessed it was probably about Liz before you disclosed it)

I have been lurking. No posts, mostly because I have not had much of value to say. But, thanks for keeping the board up and keeping it a clean safe home.

Re: Changes to the board.

Hi to all,

I have been on vacation for a week sans laptop and just got home last night. My thanks to Tere and Chris for tending to all the board's business while I was gone.

What has happened is upsetting, with no way to tell if Liz made all the posts herself or if someone, with or without her permsission, gainded access to her password. There is no way to know if Liz is in serious emotional trouble, is in a destructive interpersonal relationship or was engaging in a kind of virtual performance art by assuming various persona under the guise of one user name.

Although none of us is without empathy and compassion, we are a writing and not a self-help board and as such we are not qualified or equipped to properly deal with someone in a suicidal crisis. By searching Runboard's support site, however, I discovered that there are a number of mental health self-help boards within Runboard:

 http://runsearch.rbbt.net/search/suicide

Tere's banning of Elizabeth Anne is limited to DM. If Liz is in serious emotional trouble, I sincerely hope she gets the help she needs and deserves, on- and/or off-line.

PAX,
Kat

Re: Changes to the board.

Hi to all again,

I've been mulling over something Liz said in another thread about this board not being one that "enjoys, takes to, consumes" confessional poetry and about her feeling that "being on this board is just too much work." The first poets I read outside of a classsroom were Plath, Sexton and Rich. One hot summer I read a lot of Sexton, including her book "Live or Die":

http://www.poets.org/viewmedia.php/prmMID/5972

Several years later I was devastated to discover Sexton had killed herself before I had read the book and that somehow her suicide, unlike Plath's, had escaped me.

Jump forward a number of years, and I began reading Jane Kenyon, who wrote the poem "Having it Out with Melancholy":

http://www.poets.org/viewmedia.php/prmMID/15920

I was once again shocked and saddened to discover, while reading the NY Times end of the year list of people who had died, that Kenyon had passed way from leukemia some months earlier. She was one of my favorite poets, and I had hoped to have the opportunity to hear her read in person someday.

As for this board "being too much work," it occurs to me that perhaps posting poems in the Poetry Specturm, which is geared toward critique, was not the best use of this board for some of Liz's more recently written poems. Chalkboard and Billboard or Field Notes, which are not critique forums, or Ateliers, where members can determine the type of feedback they want, might have better served her purposes. In one of those forums, she might have received the kind of personal feedback and general comments that would not have focused on critique and revision and so might have felt less like "work" to her. Although, as I have said, we are a writing/reading board and not a self-help forum designed to assist someone in a suicidial crisis, depression and despair are part of the human condition which many people, including some of our finest writers, have struggled with and not always successfully.

Liz said of one poem she posted that it was long in the making and has had many "non-poetry, non-literary" eyes helping it birth. I'm glad of that. This board can not be all things to all people. She also wrote: I really do associate only with "lower class" people who have never read poetry before and haven't read Fitzgerald or "Moby Dick" or even "Catcher in the Rye". Fair enough, although I would point out the obvious that depression, despair and suicidal desires are no respecters of class, race, sex, intellegence or education level, etc.

Liz also wrote:

"Thank you to all of you for the wonderful gifts you've given, for finally allowing me to feel that I wasn't just writing to myself. It was an almost sacred feeling.

Bless you--Liz"

I do hope being on this board did not do Liz more harm than good, and although we did not ultimately respond to her in the way she desired, I wish her many blessings.

Hey Shab,

Re: Changes to the board.

Just to add my two cents on confessional poetry, of which I am often accused - and I take pride in that rather....all of us write about things we know about, love, loss, hate, peace, violence, childhood, rape, rage, smiles, tears, the list is endless. The style in which we choose (and I use the term 'choose' lightly here) to express, that is what is varied.

My poetry is often confessional in style, but by no means is it my journal entry. I don't lead That exciting of a life for anyone to want to read my journal entries. My poetry, on the other hand, is something I put out there with the hope that someone else might connect to it. It is inspired by what I have seen, have felt, and (yes sometimes) have happened to me.

I have never felt that the board was not welcoming of the style.

Thanks, Chris and Shab. I did leave out the word not. Correction made. Maybe my brain working faster than my fingers or some kind of strange dyslexia that sometimes afflicts me. emoticon

P.S. Edited to add dyslexia which I left out of my original post. See what I mean? Of course, the mistakes I've been making could be attributed to the fact that I only got three hours of sleep last night. Ya think? emoticon zzzzzzzzzzz

And now for a musical interlude:

The board's practice is to delete all threads initiated by a banned member, and so this morning I have deleted the threads Elizabeth Anne started in various forums. It is not the board's practice to delete the comments a banned member made in threads orginated by other members, and so I have left those in place.

Re: Changes to the board.

I stayed away from the board last night, Tuesday night. Needed to. As mentioned, I got very little sleep over the weekend. Monday's heat in the bee yards was harder on this old bod than usual. Tuesday, driving out of town, I nodded off on the highway. Not good. Monday night, explaining the circumstance to a friend, this 60 year old roue started crying, couldn't finish the tale. But there is the old saying: time to cowboy up.

Shab, I've always been quite fond of you, thinking highly of you too. You are now inducted into my rather select college of official sweety pies. Thank you for your messages. Lurk away, baby. And, yes, I too know the demon of self-inflicted pain. When I reached the age of 40 my family was ecstatic. Seems I beat the odds. Bookies lost a lot of money on that bet.

Chris, you are right. In a PM you said traffic on our board would see a hit as a result of what has transpired. It has, it will for a while, and the fall out is understandable if unfair to us. But I am not willing to give up on the board. In a month we celebrate 3 years. Anyone, look at what the board has archived. Poetry and prose. Original translations. Experimental stuff you can't find elsewhere. Exchanges, discussions, links to articles not conveniently found elsewhere. Discussions lively, honest, sometimes expansive, free of moderation. And the big thing: writing with heart. Door stays open.

Kat has removed posts started by a member disallowed access to the board. Some years ago I resigned as a moderator/member of a poetry board. I made the same request. The action is meet to me. More years ago than that I worked for AOL as a poetry chatroom host. Training was rigorous. Instruction was clear. Suicide notes on line are viewed as expressions of violence. Member to be denied access. That is where this board stands. The rule makes sense to me.

Time for this board to move on. I am an old hat at mourning. Got lots of experience at it. Trick I know is this. Make, create, think, love inspite of the odds.

Tere
